N for Nature Notes

My blog is a stream of consciousness. A blatant outlet for my thoughts, which may drop like a stone into a pool or be fished out by a kind passer by. 

And just to add a note that many of my entries are musing on plants and nature. Despite having a degree and masters in this sort of thing I’m very much an amateur when it comes to identification. So I’m on a quest to improve my knowhow on a few fronts… including botany.  

I'm currently doing a really wonderful course with Ashmoleum Natural History Society.  It's focussed and academic and so elevating.  Its introducing me to an array of new vocabulary that I have to try to ram into my dry old brain - such as zygomorphic, tepals, calyx...and lots of others I now can't remember!

A frosty start…

we arrived in our new house at the beginning of February. In the frost.  The strangest of all feelings was driving up the hill and the narrow drive through the lofty trees towards our new house...and new life. A journey made after a year of negotiations, cul de sacs and hulking upheavals in all forms - (oh yes plus the 8 years of searching all over the country for somewhere that fitted our exacting and contradictory wish list).  And on that day we headed towards a place we hardly knew and into a life we knew even less of. Adhd and greater insight

There is so much unspeakable tragedy in this world so I must point out that my musings only work on a micro personal scale… if you are going through similar feelings. If we climb the ladder of events and emotions they quickly become utterly meaningless and should be scrapped and tossed into the waste paper basket! This journey I’m on has taken an unexpected twist. I was officially diagnosed yesterday with ADHD. I thought I might lack the ‘hyper’ bit but not. I have a 4 letter acronym usually associated with young bouncy boys but at 53 on the edge of my 54th birthday Ive unearthed a lens that colours everything and if I had known 40 years ago might have smoothed a path full of bumps, dead ends and indecision.  Or would it? I’m full of mixed emotions, half revelation half shame.  Might I have been better able to control the wonky bits of my personality… eg impulse control such as telling my best friend she had a slight moustache on the day of her mother’s funeral? the thunder of hooves through the frosty mist... Roger to the Rescue!!

da daa da daa da daa ... came the sound of Roger on horse back with sword brandished high, glinting through the freezing fog. Or rather the rumble of the engine of his car ladened with pots, brushes, pasting table, dust sheets, kettle, coffee, sleeping bag and much else all the way from Oxford. I had a secret weapon and it came from my old life which was peopled and functioning (more of less). It was Roger the best of decorators and carpenters and fixing broken things. And the very kindest of people. He would have been a Knight in former times though he might not have liked the chainmail as he prefers to wear board shorts in all weathers.  Roger had been in the wings of our lives since September. I had him lined up to help when we were first going to move in in October..then had to ask him to rejig plans to pre Christmas then finally he was given the 'go' in the coldest of months in February, once we had finally exchanged.
